It was quite uncommon for bladesmiths in China to offer swords with the single edged and doubled blades. This is why all Dao featured a single-edged blade. It is one of the most defining features of this sword. The use of the single edge permitted for the sharp edge with the thicker and stronger supporting spine.

Sabre was the most common type of Dao, which wielded by the cavalry units. It features the most prominent single-edged curved blade that was not too big or too small. It has been a perfect replacement for Jian. The larger Dao variants are accessed for martial arts.
